The plaza was finished in 1940 and funded by the Work Progress Administration. It is the site of the assassination of President John F. Stop At: George Dealey Statue, South Houston Street, Dallas, TX

The plaza was named for George Bannerman Dealey (September 18, 1859 – February 26, 1946) to acknowledge and honor his civic leadership in Dallas. He was publisher of the Dallas Morning News and played major roles in the development of Dallas. He helped establish Southern Methodist University and was instrumental in bringing a Federal Reserve branch to Dallas. The plaza was built initially in recognition of the 1936 Texas Centennial and named for Mr. Dealey in 1934. The statue was erected in 1949.

Stop At: Dealey Plaza National Historic Landmark District, 500 Main St, Dallas, TX 75202-3521

Walk the route of President Kennedy’s motorcade as it passed through the plaza. Stand in the spot where the only person known to date saw the three puffs of smoke from the rifle’s firing as it appeared in the 6th floor window of the Texas Book Depository Building. Learn how he reacted to what he had observed. Numerous photo opportunities available from various angles of the 6th floor window.

Now known as the Dallas County Administration Building, the Texas Book Depository Building at the intersection of North Houston and Elm Streets is the site from which both the Warren Commission and the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald fired a rifle that killed President Kennedy.

Discuss with your tour guide the purpose of Kennedy's trip to Texas. When was the trip initially planned? Was there one shot, two or three? If the first shot missed, what caused the deflection? Was there a shooter on the Grassy Knoll? How did the event change Texas politics
